Welcome to the Department of Earth Sciences

04-07 March 2012 - PDAC - Toronto

Thanks to the many of you who dropped by the MERC/DES booth at PDAC and attended another hugely successful Alumi Reception. The reception was filled with alumni and friends who came to catch up with each other and to hear about recent initiatives in the Department, MERC, and LU by DES Chairman Dan Kontak, MERC Director Harold Gibson, and LU President Dominic Giroux.

June 2011: School of Mines Establishment

The University has approved the establishment of a School of Mines, of which the Department of Earth Sciences and Mineral Exploration Centre will be a critical part. The School will highlight LU's teaching and research in all areas of the Mining Cycle, from greenfields exploration, aboriginal consultation, and environmental evaluation through mine engineering and automation, mineral beneficiation, and occupational health & safety, to mine closure, environmental remediation, and environmental monitoring.

The Department of Earth Sciences and Mineral Exploration Centre are located in the Willet Green Miller Mineral and Mining Research Centre, which was designed from the ground up as a geoscience building. Department faculty, research scientists, and students are working on fundamental geological problems all over the world. If you are interested in studying geology, this is one of the best places in the world to do it!
