Meet the Dean

DEAN PETER LUK

Peter Luk has been the Dean of Faculty of Management at Laurentian University since July 1, 2008. He holds a BBA, a MBA and a PhD, and his research interest has been in marketing and tourism.

Prior to joining Laurentian University, he spent 27 years at Ryerson University in Toronto as a marketing professor. He did however spend majority of his tenure as an academic administrator (assistant chair student affairs, program director, school director, and associate dean). Dean Luk is a true supporter of the polytechnic model whereby academic qualifications and industry experience are equally valued in the provision of practical business education for the development of future business leaders.

At Laurentian University, he leads the School of Commerce and School of Sport Administration. Dean Luk believes in the University’s tri-culture mandate and again, the appropriate blending of theory and practice so as to provide the kind of quality university education that can actually deliver meaningful differences.

He enjoys his move to Sudbury. He has been engaging the Sudbury community, not only as an academic dean but also in his role as a board director of the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce.

Dean Luk’s top priority at Laurentian is to move toward AACSB accreditation, an international recognition of continuous improvement in terms of teaching and learning, as well as scholarly productivity. The attainment of this accreditation would no doubt place Laurentian on the map as a university of choice and useful incubator for future leaders. In fact, he had initiated the drive toward AACSB accreditation some years ago at Ryerson University and it has actually been accredited recently.

His other priorities are to:

(1) establish the signature identities of the Faculty’s offerings in sport administration, accounting, francophone program, as well as the hybrid and flexible model of delivery;

(2) upgrade the Sudbury facilities of the Faculty for better learning, teaching, and research and to help administer the planned enrolment, faculty and facility growth in Barrie;

(3) further cultivate the ongoing program partnerships with Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA Canada (CGA Canada) and Insurance Brokers Association of Canada (IBAC) and develop other exciting and synergistic initiatives;

(4) build a strong scholarly relationship with international university partners with increased emphasis on international recruitment;

(5) continue to engage in outreach initiatives (e.g. the provincially-funded bridging program for new Canadian professionals).

(6) further contribute productively in various ways to the University overall mission.
