Code of Ethics for Peer Health Educators

I value and know my role as a peer health educator. In order to best fulfill that role, I will:

  • Grant individuals respect and dignity.
  • Honor and strive to understand diversity in all its forms.
  • Recognize, through patience and understanding, that every person is constantly growing and learning.

I value and know my role as a caring helper. In order to fulfill that role, I will:

  • Offer opportunities for people to explore their thoughts and feelings. Offer myself as a link between students and the professional services available.
  • Not manipulate any situation or another person's vulnerability for my own benefit.
  • Maintain confidentiality, except when, to my best judgment, the person is in physical or mental danger which could result in self-harm
or harm to others, has a problem beyond my ability to assist, or discloses information which I must report according to law or campus policy.
I value and know my role as an educator. In order to fulfill that role, I will:

  • Learn as much as possible about the issues that affect my peers.
  • Only offer information that I am qualified to offer, and with the greatest accuracy possible.
  • Accept supervision and support from my advisor, or other professional staff.
I value and know my role as an individual. In order to best fulfill that role, I will:

  • Understand that my primary responsibility is to myself.
  • Not allow my peer education duties to interfere with my own goals and aspirations.
  • Not allow my peer educator duties put my physical or emotional well-being at risk.
  • Make decisions,in my own life, that are positive and healthy.     [Top]

Ground Rules

  • Respect others.
  • Everyone has the right to their own opinion.
  • Respect individuals confidentiality.
Conversation with client is not to be shared with others. Reasons you need to discuss client with advisor/professional are as follows:
  1. will cause pain and/or suffering to others.
  2. will cause pain and/or suffering to self.
  3. when problem presented to you is beyond your abilities.

Note: Do not use the client's name when discussing with others. Use the client's initials instead.

  • Always be honest.
If put into a situation where the client says "You have to promise note to tell anyone...", do not make this promise. Tell the client that their may be times you may have to consult with your advisor, or a professional.
  • If you need to tell someone about a client, make sure it is with a campus professional advisor.
  • If another peer educator tries to tell you about a confidential conversation that took place, STOP THEM.
  • Everyone has the right to decline answering a question, without giving an explanation. Take care of yourself first! Willingness to participate with other peer health educators - a must.
