Employment policy on Nepotism

The University will not provide a preference nor discriminate in favour of, or against, the employment of a member of an employee's immediate family for part-time or full-time employment which is paid for by University Operating or Ancillary funds or funds administered by the University. The principle of merit shall prevail and shall be the deciding factor in the selection and appointment of successful candidates.

That employment of an employee's immediate family shall not occur if employment would result in: a) a new employee working in the same department/unit as an immediate family member; b) a new employee reporting to the department/unit head or a supervisor who is an immediate family member.

Immediate family means - husband, wife, (includes common-law wife and common-law husband), son, daughter, brother, sister, mother, father, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law.

No exceptions may be permitted without the express written permission of the President.

University policy - Closure due to weather conditions

Every now and then, the University's policy, with respect to closure due to weather conditions, has to be communicated to all employees in order to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.

The University serves a basically adult population who makes individual decisions as to whether it is suitable to come to the University, either by automobile or public transportation. Also, a large segment of our full-time students live on campus and are basically unaffected by weather conditions. In addition, there are a number of essential services that must be maintained, regardless of weather conditions, such as boiler operations, security, food services, snow ploughing, etc.

In accordance with our commitment to students and the community, it is the policy of the University to remain open for all classes and services. Should extremely severe conditions require us to close or cancel classes, the decision will be made through the President's Office and announced on local radio stations. The final decision will be reached only after consultation with the Director of Physical Plant and Planning and the Chief of Security concerning access to the campus, the availability of public transportation, and the advice that may be issued by local authorities such as the Regional Police or the Ministry of Transportation. Only after such decision has been made to close the Univeristy will employees be dismissed from work. Similarly, classes will only be canceled after the decision is made through the President's Office. Individual employees or department heads are not to make decisions on early leaving or the closing of offices without specific authority from the Human Resources Office.

In those circumstances when the University decides to remain open during unfavourable weather conditions, we expect that employees will make every reasonable effort to report to work to enable us to carry out our responsibilities. In considering if every reasonable effort is made, one will use the same criteria listed above (i.e. road closures, operation of public transportation, and the advice issued by the local authorities such as the Regional Police or the Ministry of Transportation). Should you not be able to report to work, staff members should contact their immediate supervisor, and faculty members should contact their dean. If the weather conditions improve, employees are expected to report to work as soon as possible. I would appeal, in particular, to faculty members to establish telephone networks or messaging systems, in advance, to ensure that students are forewarned in the event of class cancellations. Every effort should be made to avoid circumstances where students have made special efforts to attend classes only to find that the instructor is absent.
