Admission Process

Admission Process

 

Prospective students should download the Admission Form and the referee's Appraisal Form.

 

Copies of the Appraisal Form should be given to 3 referees (references) who are able to comment on the applicant's skills and ability to succeed in the program. They should each return the completed form directly to the Office of Admissions.

 

Consideration of applications will begin on April 17, 2007 and will continue until a maximum of 15 students have been admitted. The completed Admission Form should be mailed along with the material listed to:

Information Required with the Admission Form

1.   Transcripts

Two (2) official transcripts of all completed university study. (In order to be official, a transcript must bear the seal of the issuing institution.) Graduates of Laurentian University are not required to submit a transcript from Laurentian.

 

2.   Contact information 

  • Preferred means of contact during the summer

3.   Personal statement of interest

A brief explanation (about 200 - 300 words) of why you're interested in the program, how it fits with your personal goals, what you believe you can bring to it and what you hope to get out of it. 

 

4.   Evidence (if any) of your background in science other than formal education

This might, for example, include summer job experience or volunteering in an organization.

 

5.   Evidence of communication ability

This will usually be one or two pieces of writing or something created in any medium that illustrates your ability and interest in communication. These pieces would preferably, but not necessarily, cover a science topic, or could be a description of past experience as a communicator or anything you feel would give us a better appreciation of your ability as a communicator. These should be mailed, e-mailed or given to one of the program Co-Directors (see Contact Us).

 

6.   Language proficiency

The School of Graduate Studies requires that non-Canadian applicants whose mother tongue is neither English nor French provide proof of language proficiency. A score of 550 in TOEFL or 95 in the Michigan Test for English Language proficiency is required for this program.

 

7.   Processing fee

A cheque for the amount required, according to the Admissions Procedures of the School of Graduate Studies.

Consideration of the Application

When the Admission Form, its accompanying information, and the Appraisal Forms have been received by the Admissions Office the Science Communication program team will consider each file and decide whether to recommend acceptance to the Director of the School of Graduate Studies and Research. An Admission Letter will then be sent from the Director to successful applicants.
