February 14, 2012

On Tuesday at Laurentian University’s J.N. Desmarais Library, representatives from CIBC presented Dominic Giroux, president and vice-chancellor of Laurentian University, and Dr. Peter Luk, dean of the university’s Faculty of Management, with a cheque for $250,000. The generous donation will be used to create student scholarships with the Faculty of Management. This commitment will further enhance Laurentian’s ability to attract and retain top-quality students from across the country and around the globe.

“At CIBC, we’re committed to helping Canada’s kids and young adults build a better future,” said Mary Bellefeuille, Market Vice President CIBC Retail Markets.  “We’re proud to support Laurentian University and its Faculty of Management with this investment in the next generation of business leaders.”

“This is a wonderful day for the Faculty of Management and its students,” said President Giroux. “Securing an investment of this magnitude from CIBC, an organization that has continuously shown such tremendous leadership in education, is a clear indication of Laurentian’s growing reputation for excellence across a wide-range of disciplines, and a further sign that the university is on the move.”

Laurentian University’s Faculty of Management, comprised of the School of Commerce and the School of Sports Administration, is working toward attaining Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accreditation—known, worldwide, as the longest standing, most recognized form of specialized/professional accreditation an institution and its business programs can earn.

“On behalf of all the students who will benefit from this amazing donation and on behalf of the dedicated staff and faculty who are working diligently to establish the Faculty of Management as one of the country’s foremost providers of business education, I want to express my sincere gratitude to CIBC,” said Dr. Luk.

“This gift is definitely a cause for celebration” said Chuck Lilly, Laurentian Faculty of Management alumnus and Campaign Cabinet volunteer for the university’s $50-million The Next 50 Campaign. “CIBC is a valuable member of the community, and a proud employer of a number of Laurentian graduates. I’m extremely pleased to be able to recognize CIBC for its commitment to driving creativity, innovation and prosperity.”
